Ever since the arrival of Pokémon almost three decades ago, the developers behind creature collector games have been trying to recapture some of that same magic for their own projects.

In all fairness many have found considerable success in doing so, with each taking a slightly different approach to delivering something that feels familiar but at the same time advances the genre in a significant way.

One of the most notable examples from recent years is Moonstone Island, a 2023 effort from developer Studio Supersoft, which struck that perfect balance and delivered an experience which received almost universal praise from fans and critics alike.

Now, they have just confirmed their next project, and you should get hyped. It's okay if you haven't played the first one as well, here's why.

Studio Supersoft's just officially confirmed they're working on their next game, Moonstone Academy, described as "not sequel but also not not sequel".

The original game currently sits on very positive reviews on Steam with many comparing it to the likes of juggernauts including Stardew Valley, Slay the Spire and the aforementioned Pokémon.

If they can replicate anything like this success of those then this sequel is bound to be just as much of a winner as the original release.

The company took to social media to bring in the new year with a bang, sharing a statement confirming the development and what fans can expect when it does eventually drop.

“Who wants to see what we're working on next? Not DLC but not sequel but also not not sequel," the post reads. "Another entry into the Moonstone universe."

They also shared a brief 30 second clip of the upcoming game, which retains the beautiful pixel art style of the first, with the project set in the same fantasy universe of the first game. Of course, not necessarily with a direct continuation of the story in that one.

Check it out here!

How adorable is that! They haven't shared too many details about what we can expect from the finished game, but it looks like this one will be taking place in a magical school of sorts, though what exactly our role within it will be remains unclear.

The only caveat is, at time of writing, we're waiting on a release date. The game is likely in early development, so we may have to wait a while to get our hands on it.
