PlayStation's Next Acquisition Is Way Bigger Than We Thought

"Buckle up"

2022 has been a big year for industry shaking news, and it looks like there's plenty more to come from PlayStation.

So far this year Microsoft took the world by surprise by announcing its acquisition of Call Of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard, picking up the rights to former PlayStation mascots Crash Bandicoot and Spyro The Dragon in the process. Sony responded by buying out former Halo developer Bungie.

Sony confirmed soon after news of the Bungie deal broke that there are "many more moves to make" in regards to further acquisitions. While we don't yet know which studio is up next, there have been plenty of rumours.

Earlier this month it looked as if Sony was planning to acquire Kojima Productions, the Hideo Kojima-founded studio behind Death Stranding. While this would certainly be a good fit for the PlayStation Studios family, one insider has said that Sony's next acquisition is considerably bigger.

This is according to insider and journalist Jeff Grubb, who explained on the latest episode of his Grubbsnax podcast why he had his doubts about the Kojima acquisition. Indeed, Hideo Kojima himself confirmed his studio would remain independent just a few days ago, seemingly putting this particular rumour to bed.

"If you’ve heard the rumors about the big acquisition from Sony, it was never Kojima Productions, at least not as far as I’m aware," Grubb said. "Like the people that were hearing this stuff, including me, that was not a name that was thrown around. It is bigger than Kojima Productions."

While Grubb doesn't reveal any of the names that were being thrown around, at least one industry analyst believes that Dark Souls and Elden Ring studio FromSoftware is the current target for Sony.

Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based game industry consultancy Kantan Games, took to Twitter to share their reasoning.

This isn't the first time FromSoftware's name has been floated in relation to a Sony acquisition, and it'd certainly be a huge name to bring under the PlayStation Studios banner. Plus, you know, whatever makes Bloodborne 2 happen is cool with me.
