Xbox's next-gen console is doing something we've never seen before

In an unprecedented move

Xbox’s next console, which could still be a few years away, might be implementing something fans have wanted for years.

Rumours are swirling that Microsoft is currently hard at work on the follow-up consoles to their Series X and S models, and it could mean that players will have access to more than just Xbox titles.

A recent report by Windows Central notes that there was a pitch to scrap backward compatibility and lean into Windows implementation.

This was rejected by the higher-ups, and instead, it seems Xbox could open the platform for other storefronts, including Steam.

What this could mean for the next generation of gaming, is that the Xbox would act more like a PC under your TV, giving fans access to a larger range of games, including those published by Sony.

In recent years, Sony has pushed a number of their PlayStation games over to Steam in a bid to expand the audience, and if the next Xbox allows for Steam access, then titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man and The Last of Us, could be playable on Xbox hardware.

Microsoft has been very open in recent months, and is happy to work with other platforms to showcase their games.

Not only is Forza now available on PlayStation, but soon, Gears of War will also be there for PlayStation owners.

With this in mind, it really does seem like Xbox is breaking down the borders between platforms in the hopes of levelling the playing field and bringing more games to consumers.

Should the company move in this direction, we could even see Epic Games Store or Itch.io represented, giving us thousands more games to play.

These are just rumours for now, but given how Microsoft is moving, there’s definitely some fuel to this fire, but we’ll have to wait a while before anything official comes out.
