It’s been six years since the last mainline Gears of War game was released, but a new rumour places the next one directly into the sightlines of a major PS5 exclusive.
If you've been waiting patiently for a new Gears of War, your tribulations are about to pay off thanks to the soon-to-be launch of Gears of War: E-Day later this year.
With late 2026 firmly locked off for most major publishers due to the impending release of GTA VI, Gears of War: E-Day and other games like it are targeting earlier windows to launch their games outside of the GTA hype cycle.
While a bigger reveal planned for June will likely reveal the release date for the upcoming prequel, fans reckon that they may have spotted an early clue as to when this will be.

Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide and WWE announced over the weekend that its pro wrestling event Triplemania 2026 will take place on 11 September and 13 September.
Why is this relevant, you might ask? Well, the event’s sponsor is none other than Gears of War: E-Day.
This news has signalled to Gears fans that this could be the release window for Gears of War: E-Day, which still currently has no release date attached to it.
Obviously, it doesn’t confirm anything. But I’d wager that if Microsoft wants to get eyes on its latest first-party release, especially for one of its most popular franchises, then a marketing spot at a major wrestling event will do just that.

On the flip side, this does put it within firing range of Marvel’s Wolverine, the next big first-party PS5 exclusive that Sony is releasing in the latter half of the year.
Wolverine is a standalone entry in the wider Marvel’s Spider-Man series, a franchise which has consistently been one of Sony’s top sellers since its debut in 2018, putting both major publishers head-to-head for September’s top spot.
Gears of War: E-Day is the first mainline new entry in the Gears of War franchise since 2019’s Gears 5.
It won’t be a continuation of the storyline that was set up in the most recent entries, but instead a prequel set during Emergence Day, an event in Gears of War canon which occurred 14 years before the first game and sets up the central conflict in the original trilogy.
The blurb on Gears of War: E-Day reads: “Fourteen years before Gears of War, war heroes Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return home to face a new nightmare: the Locust Horde. These subterranean monsters, grotesque and relentless, erupt from below, laying siege on humanity itself.”
It is set for release on Xbox Series X/S and PC, but unlike many recent Xbox Game Studios titles, it isn’t confirmed for a release on PS5.
Meanwhile, the game will get a larger reveal next month, with a 30-minute Gears of War: E-Day Direct following the Xbox Games Showcase on 7 June.
