Genuinely great open-world games are seriously hard to come by. And open-world games that are free to play? Well, you wanna be very careful about which ones you invest time into.

Fortunately, there are some bangers out there if you're really keen to play a free open-world game. Once such game actually released earlier this year, and is basically the twisted child of Bloodborne, Fallout, and Rust, with a hint of The Last Of Us.

I am, of course, referring to Once Human. Since launching earlier this year, massive open-world survival game has been a hit, with thousands of positive reviews on Steam and tens of thousands of regular players.

According to user reviews, there are hundreds - if not thousands of hours - to sink into Once Human. And while not everyone is looking for that kind of investment, those that have chosen to stick with the game are clearly having a blast. Not bad for something that's free.

One review writes: "I have made a mistake. A glorious, time-devouring, sleep-annihilating mistake, and it’s called Once Human. This game is like if someone mixed Mad Max, Minecraft, and an alien horror movie, then whispered, 'Go nuts.' I thought, 'Hey, I’ll try it for an hour.' HA. SIX HOURS LATER, I’m fighting a tentacle-faced monster with a crowbar, yelling at my Deviant buddy (who’s literally a bug the size of a dog) to PLEASE stop eating mushrooms and help me survive."

It's worth noting some have criticised the game world for feeling quite empty, while others argue there aren't enough players (SteamDB tells me there are currently 24,000 in-game).

As with any MMORPG, you pretty much get out of it what you put into it. But if a post-apocalyptic adventure is what you crave, this could be the game for you.
