A game described as The Last of Us meets Cyberpunk 2077 returns after eight long years, and gamers are torn.

You’d be forgiven if you had completely forgotten about this game, because I know I had. That was until I watched its E3 2018 reveal trailer and remembered how awesome it looks. Perhaps the most shocking fact is that 2018 was eight years ago. Yikes.

This game blends Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us's post-apocalyptic setting that sees humanity are on the brink of extinction, with Cyberpunk 2077.

Also set in a not-too-distant future, in a very different world, but in its own way, just as deadly. Inspired by Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, humans rely on cybernetic augmentations to complete even the most mundane tasks, and the location of Night City is riddled with corruption from top to bottom.

What Is the Game Comparable to The Last of Us and Cyberpunk 2077?

The game in question is called The Last Night, developed and published by the indie studio Odd Tales.

“Humans first knew the era of survival. Then they knew the era of work. Now they live in the era of leisure,” reads the synopsis of the game.

“Machines have surpassed human labour not only in strength, but in precision, intellect, and creativity. The fight for survival doesn’t mean food and water, but a purpose for living. People now define themselves by what they consume, not what they create.”

I love the sprite visuals, the old-school but new-gen charm, and the fantastic music that kinda reminds me of Oxenfree.

However, as good as The Last Night looks, information on the game has been radio silent for nearly a decade.

“Whatever happened to The Last Night? It's been almost nine years since the announcement at E3!” asked Redditor masoe.

“It's been on my wishlist for almost four years and was announced in 2017. Does anyone know if it's still being developed? There's still a Steam page for it.”

“The Steam page mentions using generative AI, so some work has been done in the last few years,” replied sackboy198, providing some sort of update.

“The website has a blog with entries from 2024, so possibly?” revealed salty_cluck.

“It’s hanging out in development hell with Beyond Good & Evil 2,” joked a Reddit user.

“Gonna guess it was a fake game which wasn't even in development, then got hype from a trailer. They either tried to start making it and failed or didn't bother. Most likely a bs game,” suggested empathetical.

As of right now, there is no release date on its Steam page. Hopefully, The Last Night isn't dead and buried.

Fingers crossed that we’ll get some sort of official update on its progress this year.
