Crimson Desert has been taking the world by storm as one of the most visually and mechanically impressive open-world games we’ve ever seen.

It actually defies logic sometimes as when you look at gameplay online you’re either seeing a gritty, down-to-Earth battle between medieval knights or a man swinging through a forest like Spider-Man before hopping onto a rideable dragon.

That viral content has done wonders for the game’s global appeal but for those who are adamant it isn’t for them, you should have over to Steam.

On the Steam store is a beloved, classic RPG that’s technically larger than Crimson Desert yet was released several years earlier, and the best part is it’s free-to-play.

Elder Scrolls Players Already Know What’s Coming

Whether you love Crimson Desert or hate it, if you’re playing on Steam you need to give The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall a go.

“The ancient golem Numidium, a powerful weapon once used by the great Tiber Septim to unify Tamriel, has been found in Iliac Bay” begins the game’s description.

“In the power struggle that follows, the King of Daggerfall is murdered and his spirit haunts the kingdom. The Emperor Uriel Septim VII sends his champion to the province of High Rock to put the king’s spirit to rest and ensure that the golem does not fall into the wrong hands.”

Now, keep in mind before you dive in that this isn't going to be your typical Elder Scrolls games.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim changed everything and we’re expecting The Elder Scrolls VI to be just as impactful, but before the series shifted to full 3D with The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind they were very different experiences.

That’s not to say Daggerfall is a poor game though, far from it. With procedurally generated quests it’s an RPG unlike any other and obviously did something right as we got plenty of sequels out of it.

In terms of map size it’s also still one of the biggest open-world games going, spreading across over 200,000km.

Crimson Desert’s open-world is equally as impressive but only spans over 100km in size.

This is of course due to how limited the technology was back then when making games. With less technologically taxing visuals the worlds could be larger as there was less to load in at any given time, but while Daggerfall is very much a product of its time it doesn’t make it any less impressive.

Players can experience the full game on Steam for free so if you’ve been wanting a break from Crimson Desert or want another RPG to take your mind off the discourse, Daggerfall is one to check out.
