Star Wars Battlefront 2 is getting a remaster, which should hopefully make you forget about the recent disaster of a re-release if you haven’t already.
The Star Wars Battlefront games (talking about the originals not the reboots) are two of the most influential shooters of all time, which makes you wonder how they managed to mess it up so badly with the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection.

The best way I could describe it was a shot of espresso chased with battery acid, and while a new patch has seemingly fixed the problems present at launch the playerbase has dwindled to a handful.

Now if the whole thing made you sad and wish for a proper remaster of the games, you’re in luck, half-luck anyway.
A modder, skurtyyskirts, has been quietly putting together a new-gen remaster of Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2005) for PCs, complete with raytracing.
You can see the progress for yourself with a trailer on YouTube, and while it’s still in pretty early development I think we can all agree that the difference between the original and this first is night and day.
The lightsabers and blaster fire in particular look incredible, and there’s a lovely sheen over all the metallic surfaces.

Unfortunately there’s no word on whether this mod will be made public, if it’s even finished as there’s still a lot of work to be done before then.
If it does eventually launch though, I’d imagine it won’t work in an online setting so you’d have to be content with just replaying the game’s story mode and fighting bots, though that’s not the worst thing in the world.
This is the kind of love and effort the Star Wars Battlefront games need for a re-release, and hopefully we see an official product like this mod one day.
