PlayStation Plus Users Urged Not To Miss 'Mesmerising' Free Shooter

A popular FPS series with a long-lasting legacy is currently being recommended to PlayStation Plus users, and it might be the right time to dive in if you haven’t yet.

PlayStation Plus is a great service if you’re a gamer on a tight budget. For just a small monthly fee, you’re basically able to access hundreds of different games, depending on the tier you subscribe to.

The service hosts all manner of games, from recent bangers to long-lost classics. It’s a great little thing if you like to dip in and out of games, searching for your next favourite.

Right now, PlayStation Plus users are being recommended to try out the Doom series, with most of the games currently accessible through PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium.

As one user posted on the PlayStation Plus Reddit page, “With Premium you have access to Doom, Doom 2, Doom 64 (which is a separate game and not a port of the original, I didn't realize this until recently), Doom 3, 2016 and Eternal. If you never played the OG, it holds up surprisingly well.”

This is essentially the entire mainline Doom series, with the exception of Doom: The Dark Ages which came out earlier this year.

Is Doom worth playing in 2025?

As someone who played through the entire Doom series last year, I’d also recommend checking the games out.

The first two still hold up, even for games that are now 30+ years old. You may need to look up a guide for some of the harder levels though if you get stuck.

Another user came to recommend the series too, particularly Doom: Eternal which released back in 2020. “Was in the same boat as OP,” they wrote. “Doom Eternal really scratched the shooter itch I had.”

And another recommended both Doom (2016) and Doom: Eternal. “Doom Eternal's ray tracing is mesmerising, I kept staring at every reflective surface,” they wrote.

“But a warning, they both play a little differently, you are more free to use anything you want in 2016 and it's fun. But in Eternal, you have to use the right weapons and the ammo is more scarce, and it's incredibly fast-paced.”

Other shooters that have been recommended in the same thread include Sniper Elite 4, Returnal, and the Wolfenstein series.

The latter is a good recommendation in particular, considering there are already four games in the rebooted version of the series, and it shares some of the same DNA as the Doom series as well.
