Each month regardless of the tier that you subscribe to, subscribers of Sony’s PlayStation Plus service are welcomed with a plethora of new games to play as well as other additional benefits such as DLC, discounts and more.

Today we can look forward to the three new inclusions to the PlayStation Plus Essential tier for February 2024 which includes Rollerdrome, Steelrising and Foamstars, the latter of which is today’s topic of discussion.

Check out the Foamstars trailer below!

For better or worse, Foamstars from Square Enix looks to be very much inspired by the Nintendo multiplayer series Splatoon. Whether it's the original game on the Nintendo Wii U or the more recent releases such as Splatoon 3 on Nintendo Switch, Splatoon is at the very least a fun series, and no doubt Foamstars will be hoping to at least replicate a slither of its success. Whether success can be achieved with Foamstars or if it’s dead on arrival, remains to be seen. I guess, only time will tell.

Gamers on Reddit have been discussing the release of Foamstars and it seems that expectations are rather mixed, to say the least. “What are your thoughts on the game before it's released?” asked Klutzy-Beautiful-828. As we know, Foamstars is out now on PS5 and PS4.

“I think it will be good, to be honest. However, I think that they really need to tweak the look of the bubbles on the map, as from what I've seen from the trailers, the bubbles seem to cover up and obscure the map geometry,” they explained.

“It looks cute, I guess. Not my kind of game, so I’m not going to try it out,” said CartographerOdd447. “I played the beta, and it was boring. I give it eight months before it is shut down,” Cindy_Lennox claimed. “Zero interest,” replied a to-the-point Reddit user.

There was some positivity in the Reddit thread with comments such as “Early reviews say the game is great. I’m looking forward to playing it,” from CooksNGames and “Genuinely looking forward to Foamstars ngl. It's great to see another liquid shooter on the market, Splatoon needs real competition,” replied Monnomo.

Whether Foamstars can be a success, I guess we’ll find out in a few weeks or months. It’s at least given itself a decent chance as a PS Plus inclusion, but with it being a PlayStation exclusive, it’s sectioned off a large chunk of its potential concurrent player base on PC and Xbox.

Foamstars is available now on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
