The PlayStation Plus free games for September 2023 are still weeks away, but it's fair to say there's a cautious optimism around the next batch of freebies.

2023 has, so far, been something of a rocky year for PlayStation Plus with plenty of ups and downs. We've had some iconic trilogies and stunning PS5 exclusives, but there have also been some missteps.

August's free games, for instance, didn't exactly go down brilliantly with the majority of fans. Subscribers can currently grab PGA Tour 2K23, Dreams, and Death’s Door. While I'd argue that's a pretty solid lineup - especially the excellent indie gem Death's Door - you can never please everyone.

So why are hopes so high for September? Well, as I'm sure you're aware, Xbox plans to release a little game called Starfield on 6 September. Given this juggernaut RPG will be available day one on the rival Game Pass service, you'd have to assume PlayStation will at least attempt to respond with a big offering.

While I'm certainly not suggesting PlayStation can really hope to match Starfield with is September free games, there are options. Consider the fact Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launches in October. That could mean Marvel's Spider-Man or Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales could be added to the PlayStation Plus Essential lineup for September, setting the stage for the PlayStation 5 sequel.

It could also finally be the month PlayStation breaks out a big gun like Ghost Of Tsushima. Again, this isn't really comparable to Starfield, but it's a big move that would soften the blow for PlayStation owners who have to hear from their Xbox mates how amazing Bethesda's RPG is. Whichever way you slice it, PS Plus subscribers are going to be hoping for a meaty open-world game to distract them from not having Starfield, and something like Ghost Of Tsushima or Marvel's Spider-Man could fit the bill.

Of course we've still got weeks to go before we find out for sure what Sony has up its sleeve for September. Till then, I am begging you to go play Death's Door. It quite honestly slaps.
