PlayStation Plus first free game for July is a PS2 banger from our childhood

PlayStation Plus first free game for July is a PS2 banger from our childhood

What a great addition

An all-time classic PlayStation 2 game is reportedly coming to PlayStation Plus, and we simply can’t wait.

PlayStation Plus has unlocked an entirely new library of bangers with the inclusion of PlayStation 2 games, kicking things off with Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Tomb Raider Legend.

PlayStation 2 titles, like all classic games, are only available on PlayStation Plus through the Premium tier, so if you’re a fan of retro games it might be worth upgrading if the price doesn’t put you off.

As a bit of added incentive, it seems like PlayStation is priming another fantastic title for the service, TimeSplitters.

As spotted by Gematsu on Twitter, or X if you prefer that, TimeSplitters was recently rated for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in Taiwan, which is almost always an indication that the title is coming to PlayStation Plus sooner or later.

For those who haven’t had the pleasure of playing it, TimeSplitters is a wacky first-person shooter that’s often considered to be the spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007.

The plot follows a temporal war that sees a colourful cast of characters attempt to prevent the distortion and destruction of Earth’s history.

A revival of the TimeSplitters series was in the works for the longest time, and would have remade the beloved shooter for modern platforms. Unfortunately the game was cancelled, which is a crying shame as leaks of its visuals and gameplay looked brilliant.

Whether the upcoming addition to PlayStation Plus features the online mode is unknown, and unlikely, but it has a great singleplayer campaign that’s more than enough for it to be worth playing if you haven’t already.

Now all that’s left to do is wait for PlayStation to make an official announcement, which will hopefully pop up later this month if we’re lucky.
