Large technology corporations such as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are always thinking about what the future may hold, perhaps even decades in advance in the hope of staying ahead of its competition.

The most recent console generation of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch have each seen some absolute banger video game releases and it’s certainly an awesome time to be a gamer. It seems that at some point during any console generation, we might ask ourselves, surely it can’t get any better, right? Only to be proved wrong with the arrival of the next shiny new console.

More recently, Sony announced the PlayStation 5 Slim which is set to release in just a few day's time. For the more immediate future, we do not know when the PlayStation 6 will be released, though recent rumours have speculated that the PS6 could arrive in 2028 with its potential release date not pleasing some fans. That being said, as reported by Gematsu in an attempt to stay one step ahead of the game, recent trademark registrations imply that Sony is not only planning for the PS6 but also the PS7, PS8, PS9 and PS10.

So what does this all mean, exactly? Well, probably not much at this stage. For example, Sony registered for the PlayStation 5 in 2006 and that console was never released until 14 years later in 2020. It’s more than likely that Sony has registered the trademarks to prevent randoms from claiming a name and attempting to hold the Japanese tech giant at ransom.

Traditionally, Sony tends to have a six-to-seven-year gap in between its main console generations from the original PlayStation in 1994 to the launch of the PlayStation 5 in 2020. So going by that logic, the PS6 might actually arrive between 2026 to 2028. As for the PS10, we could be waiting several decades for its arrival, assuming we’re not ghostly spectres by then. Still, just imagine, if video games look as good as they do now, what will they look like by the time the PS10 eventually arrives?
