PlayStation 6 leak leaves fans divided on price

"Affordable" isn't exactly a definitive amount

Is it too early to start discussing the PlayStation 6? Well, actually no.

Typically, a Sony console lasts for six to seven years before it’s replaced by a successor.

Later this year, the PlayStation 5 will celebrate its fifth birthday so with that in mind, the console is in its twilight years, so to speak.

I’m imagining we’ll be looking at a seven-year life cycle with the PlayStation 5.

It remains so popular that there’s no reason for Sony to rush the PlayStation 6 out of the gate too prematurely.

It’s clearly something they’re thinking about behind the scenes though as little tidbits of information are beginning to emerge.

This year, PlayStation 5 users have Ghost of Yōtei to look forward to.

Leaker KeplarL2 has taken to NeoGAF to report that two SoCs are in development for the next-gen console.

“There's two SoCs in development for next-gen, [I don’t know] if it's a Series X/S situation or home console and handheld, but probably one of them will be affordable at least,” they originally wrote, later adding, “Yes, the two SoCs I mentioned in that thread are for PS6.”

If you’re sitting there wondering what an SoC is, it stands for system on a chip so it’s the processing system that’s being developed more so than, say, the console’s aesthetics.

It’s interesting that Keplar says that two versions are being developed, one of which will be affordable.

Well, of course, it’s impossible to say what ‘affordable’ is, but fans have taken to debating the console’s potential price anyway.

“I can see two SoCs where one is in the ballpark of the PS5 Pro in performance for 400 and the other being 700 with true 2x performance uplift compared to PS5,” suggested SlashCrashPC.

“To be honest, I would really love this approach. [Two] SoC for [two] consoles released day one, maybe a PS6 for $600 and a PS6 Pro for $800-$1000. I do think it is a better solution to release both consoles at the start of the generation and only have mid-gen revisions of them,” added Silviu_Parvu.

“I feel like ‘affordable’ needs defining all of a sudden,” added a more dubious RipMcStudly.

Of course, it’s too early to comment on price but this is an interesting tidbit of information nonetheless. It’ll be exciting to see what else comes to light over the next 12 months and beyond.
