The PlayStation 6 is going to break the gaming industry, and our bank accounts, but the inevitable financial burden of owning one sounds like it’s about to get worse.

According to leaks Sony is indeed making plans for the PlayStation 6, but it’s also planning a handheld console as well.

This will be different to the PlayStation Portal which only allows for streaming games from your PS5

It’s a similar move to Xbox, as the head of Xbox Phil Spencer confirmed that a handheld is on the cards but it won’t exist for many, many years.

Nintendo is already in the handheld market with the Nintendo Switch, and leaked designs for the Nintendo Switch 2 seemingly confirm the company won’t be changing its stance on portable gaming.

Hardware leaker zhangzhonghao shared the information online, which says PlayStation will continue to work with AMD and future consoles should be backwards compatible with the PlayStation 5, possibly the PlayStation 4 as well.

It sounds like a more high-tech version of the PlayStation Vita, but obviously one that works with the existing library of PlayStation games rather than needing its own.

Given the popularity and success of Valve’s Steam Deck it’s obvious why gaming companies like PlayStation and Xbox are now in a mad dash to get their own portable gaming hardware out as well.

Whether Sony’s portable console can compete or not is yet to be seen, especially since so many of its games like God Of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man are on PC anyway, so you can just use a Steam Deck.

Obviously take the leaks with a grain of salt, as nothing has been confirmed by Sony at the time of writing, and it’s likely going to be a few years before anything related to the PlayStation 6 gets announced, let alone a separate console entirely.
