PlayStation 6 tease promises beloved feature isn't going anywhere

You can rest assured

While it’s still quite a way off in the future, conversation around the PlayStation 6 is starting to build as players look to what will come next from Sony.

The PlayStation brand has been around for a long time now, and it’s not going anywhere, so another console is pretty much a guarantee.

Sony's consoles have offered a discless version for two generations now.

Speaking on podcast Kiwi Talkz, former Sony boss Shawn Layden commented on the next PlayStation console saying that it won’t go fully discless.

He said, “I think it'll be hard for them to go fully discless even with the next generation.”

This will come as a welcome relief to many who still prefer to have the choice of buying physical media, despite the surge in digital purchasing.

Layden remarked that, “The ability to go to a discless solution is really, the key points of that is which part of your market cannot be served by that.”

This comes after reflecting that many players simply don’t have a steady, stable, or reliable internet connection which limits how they can buy their games.

He referred to a lot of athletes and military personnel who take their consoles and a stack of games with them overseas.

Although the industry is seeing a lot more digital sales nowadays, physical sales aren’t going anywhere, yet.

I’d argue that most digital games are sold in sales, when you spot something with a hefty discount and decide to buy it then and there.

It’s good to know that Sony is keeping an eye on disc sales - not only does it work for more gamers, but it’s great for games preservation, something the industry isn’t great with.

If you’ve got a collection of games sat on a shelf, they should be safe for a while, as long as backwards compatibility is still pursued.
