The live-service market is incredibly volatile; on a monthly basis, news arises of additional titles ending content or support, or even delisting entirely.
Blindfire is one such live-service game that has been on its last legs for a while, with active development on the title ceasing one year ago.
The game’s delisting had begun to feel ultimately like a question of when and not if but instead of walking away from the title, developer Double Eleven has determined a different fate.
PlayStation 5 users can now claim Blindfire at no cost as Double Eleven has decided to make the game free-to-play, rolling out the same changes across PC and Xbox Series X/S.

“It has been about a year since we stopped active development on the project. So why are we talking about it again? Well, we have just released the final update and rebranded the game to Blindfire: Lights Out,” devs wrote.
“We have decided to make it free-to-play and keep the servers online indefinitely. We are doing this because we believe games are art and they deserve to be preserved.
“We refuse to bury what we built just because things didn't go perfectly. We are keeping it alive because we are proud of it.
“You won't see adverts or marketing campaigns trying to drag you back in. This is just a gift to those who want to see what we created.
“We loved making this game. Watching playtesters get to grips with our twist on the FPS was a massive highlight for us and seeing some big streamers jump into our world was a proper thrill.”
As for what you can expect from the final update devs mentioned, two new weapons have been introduced in the form of the Desolation, a “sticky-slug shotgun”, and the Tempest, a “precision burst rifle”.

The update also adds new achievements, new skins, and audio aim assist which should help out those with accessibility needs.
Game preservation is of great concern in the industry, so it’s a joy to see a game opt to keep the lights on instead of sunsetting for good.
It’s never been smooth sailing for Blindfire with the game always having generated a mixed response, but there’s a lot to enjoy in this unique first-person shooter.
The gimmick of the game is that players compete in pitch-black arens, relying on sound and high-tech gadgets in order to try and get the upper-hand.
You can understand my comparison to Daredevil, Marvel’s famed blind street-level hero who uses a sort of echolocation to gain the advantage on his foes.
Of course, you’re not playing on a completely pitch-black screen. The muzzle flash of your gun illuminates your surroundings, for example, which can be both helpful and give you away.
You can also find things like scanners that temporarily show the silhouettes of nearby foes .. if they’re not hiding in the shadows.
It’s a great FPS for newcomers as even eliminated players still get to join in the fun.
If you’re eliminated, you can use a night vision camera and control environmental traps to mess with and sabotage the remaining players with fun examples including Jack in the Boxes and Confetti Cannons.
Over on the PlayStation Store, 47% of players awarded the game a perfect score of five, so it’s definitely worth giving a go - especially as it now won’t cost you a penny.
