While Sony has been stepping up its game when it comes to emulating retro games on the PlayStation 5, it has been, so far, limited to just PlayStation and PlayStation 2.
This is due to the simplicity of emulation for these consoles. The PlayStation 3 is a much trickier beast, but it seems that Implicit Conversions, the company behind the emulations may soon be able to bring PS3 classics to PlayStation 5.
PlayStation is still celebrating the 30th anniversary of the console brand
In a recent roadmap, the emulation company has included a note on researching and developing a PS3 emulator for their proprietary emulator, Syrup.

It is under a heading called “Dreaming About”, which makes it sound very speculative, however, it shows that it’s on the radar and could become a possibility as time passes.
This is a very experimentation phase in the development of the emulator, so I’d temper your expectations for now.
Should the company crack the case we could end up seeing classic PS3 titles such as God of War, Killzone 2, and inFAMOUS, making their way to PlayStation 5 via rerelease.
PlayStation 3 architecture has always been overly complicated, making emulation difficult. It’s a notoriously difficult challenge for the emulation space.

While there are emulators for PC that have made strides to preserve the PS3 era of games, creating something that could pass the stringent quality assurances of Sony to make it to PSN, is another challenge in itself.
If Implicit Conversions manage to overcome this hurdle, it would open the doors for many dormant Sony franchises to make the leap into the current generation of consoles.
And, much like the recent spate of PS1 and PS2 gems that have been released, these would all come with a new batch of trophies, rewind support, and upscaled visuals.
Let’s hope the research and development team can knock this one from ‘dreaming’ to ‘in progress.’
