Following a recent update on Sony’s website, the PlayStation 2 is officially the best-selling console of all time - but potentially not for long.
Thank you in advance to Matt Wales over on Eurogamer for the original source!
The PlayStation 2 is (as of March this year) 24 years old, with the very first models dropping on March 4, 2000 in Japan.

Since then, according to changes made to the official PlayStation website last night, the PS2 has gone on to sell a whopping 160,000,000 units.
For comparison, that's more than the population of Mexico or Japan. It's also more than the population of the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands combined.
Its status as the best-selling console of all time wasn’t actually in doubt prior to Sony’s recent update, but it is nice to get some official figures directly from the horse's mouth.
However, it likely won’t stay the best-selling console of all time for much longer. One console is rapidly closing in on Sony’s record, and it will likely topple it at some point in the next couple of years.

According to Nintendo’s most recent estimates, they’ve sold roughly 146,000,000 Nintendo Switch’s since it first released in 2017.
Considering that they’ve come this close to Sony’s record in such a comparatively short amount of time, it does stand to reason that they will eventually come out on top. Especially considering, you know, nobody is really buying brand-new PS2s these days.
Plus, the Nintendo Switch 2 should be revealed before the end of the fiscal year - if Nintendo’s own president is to be believed.
Now of course, you wouldn’t add the sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2 together… but there will likely be a bump in sales once Nintendo reduce the price of their older models.

Expect a “Nintendo Switch officially the best-selling console of all-time” headline at some point before 2027.
