Santa Monica Studio, the developers of God of War, are hard at work on… something. Things have been quiet from the studio, they have recently released the Valhalla DLC for God of War: Ragnarök, but other than that they’re apparently hard at work on a new project.
At least, that’s what Creative Director, Cory Barlog, has communicated via Twitter. The studio lead is being rather cryptic for now and keeping his cards close to his chest until the time is right for an announcement.
The most recent project for Santa Monica Studios is the Valhalla DLC for God of War Ragnarök
In his tweet, he said, “Seeing some early things coming together on this thing I am working on right now and GOD DAMN the people I get to work with at @SonySantaMonica are just f**king beyond brilliant.” Of course, fans are wondering what this mystery project is with many of them speculating it’s a return to Kratos’ adventures in a new God of War, while others believe it’s a new IP.

A reply from Jeet Shroff, once director at Santa Monica Studios stirred the pot further by saying, “Can’t wait to see where y’all are taking this crazy thing we cooked up!” Which means it’s likely this project has been ‘cooking’ for a while now. Whatever it is, it’s sure to be outstanding, given the history of the studio and its partnership with Sony.
According to the studio themselves, they are currently “Spread out on a lot of different things.” Whether this means there are several games in the pipeline, or that the team is working across several aspects of the same game, is hard to know. Many fans in the replies beneath the tweet are speculating that as the game is in its early stages it’ll likely be released for the PlayStation 6, rather than in this generation, which makes sense given the movement at Sony and their belief that this generation only has a couple more years left.
