GTA 5 Gamers Distraught as Multiplayer Offering Shuts Down For Good

It’s the end of an era. Ahead of the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, Alt:V has confirmed its upcoming closure.
If you’re unfamiliar, Alt:V is essentially an alternative to FiveM, Rockstar Games’ own multiplayer mod roleplaying server.
It describes itself as "a free modification for Grand Theft Auto V that lets you play on dedicated servers with custom gamemodes”.
For years, both offerings have run side by side, giving GTA V and GTA Online players several options for their online escapades. Here's what the team had to say, and why.

Unfortunately though, after a whopping nine years in action, Alt:V is due to shut down in July - and Rockstar Games is to blame.
"This is not an easy message to write," began Alt:V developer Vadzz in a message posted to Discord, as spotted by Twitter/X user videotechuk via GamesRadar+.
"For the past nine years, we've been building Alt:V – starting as a small side project and growing into a full-scale multiplayer platform used by hundreds of servers and thousands of players around the world.
“It's been years of solving hard problems and trying new ideas. Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have made it clear that FiveM is the only authorized platform for GTA V multiplayer modding, as defined in their Platform License Agreement (PLA).
“In accordance with that policy, and at Take-Two's request, Alt:V will begin a structured shutdown process in 2026."

This is, as I’m sure you agree, completely gutting - especially as it's taken Rockstar Games several years to reach such a verdict. FiveM was acquired in 2023.
Beginning on 2 March, Alt:V will stop accepting new community servers with public access to the server toolkit also being revoked.
On 4 May, Vadzz added that “the public server listing will be shut down and will no longer be accessible”.
It’s recommend that “all server owners currently operating on Alt:V begin planning their migration to FiveM as early as possible”.
Vaddz also adds, "Make sure you can still log into the Server Manager before this date, so your server continues working and you retain access to required tooling during the transition."
Eventually, on 6 July, Alt:V will reach end-of-support with community operations officially winding down.
“All remaining community servers are expected to cease operations by July 6, 2026. By that time, community servers must have migrated,” the message reads.
"This is tough news for everyone – both developers and players. As FiveM is now Rockstar Games' official platform for modding-based experiences, we've done our best to give you extra time to move your servers to their new home, and we will continue to do everything we can to make the switch over as smooth as possible.
“All of us have put a huge amount of time and energy into building Alt:V. Thank you for being part of this journey and for everything you've done to help multiplayer grow."
You won’t be surprised to discover that gamers are gutted.
“A very sad day. Alt:V was the platform to beat - one of the best communities I’ve ever been a part of,” remarked Twitter/X user FarhanSoftware.
“What a joke,” added GamingWithNuke.
“This really f**king sucks, ngl,” declared nejbywastaken.
I quite agree. What a sombre few months it’ll be as Alt:V approaches its final shutdown date.
