Nintendo Switch gamers warned to claim free currency before it's gone forever

Say goodbye to the perks

Nintendo is doing away with its rewards scheme in a move that means any rewards you currently have saved will vanish soon.

Any player who has bought digital games on the Nintendo Switch will see that your purchase is rewarded with gold points totalling one percent of the price.

Nintendo is ending its gold points scheme before Switch 2 preorders start

Each gold point is worth a penny to be redeemed against future purchases for some money off.

While it never saved massive amounts of money, it was a nice feature to get a bargain every once in a while.

You could also insert game cartridges and claim gold points on those too, usually earning around 50 points per game.

Well, this scheme is ending according to Nintendo themselves.

The rewards feature will be ending on 24 March and points will no longer be earned.

You will have some time to spend the points you have so far accrued - points expire after 12 months.

It’s perhaps a good time to go through all your game cartridges and see if you’ve got any unclaimed points, then get them spent on a new game.

I’ve always been a fan of these reward schemes, so my hope is that this is only being cancelled to refresh the feature for the Nintendo Switch 2.

With the low cost of some Switch games on the eShop I ended up with a few free games here and there, which is always a lovely surprise.

As with any reward scheme, the points soon added up and would help lower income players get little discounts.

You can find all the details on Twitter (the Nintendo webpage is currently down) and it runs down when everything ends and expires.

Essentially, it boils down to, ‘nothing earns gold points’ any longer, and you have 12 months to spend what you have.
