GTA VI fans are seemingly divided over the upcoming Rockstar game, with some believing it’ll be too “woke” to be fun.
The Grand Theft Auto series built its reputation on its crude humour and dramatic violence, with no social or political group being safe from its mockery.

Rockstar Games have continuously pushed the boundary of satirical comedy, whether it be through caricatures of real-life people or groups or an avalanche of in-game commercialism that mocks real business practices.

Now though, it seems Rockstar will be choosing their targets more carefully, in an attempt to not offend certain groups of people, which many fans are perceiving as the company succumbing to “woke culture”
The biggest example of this was the criticism the company received when GTA VI’s female protagonist was leaked, leading to some backlash from idiots believing only men could be the main characters in GTA.
Reddit user TheThotality made a post asking: “What's up with GTA VI and the complaints about it being woke?”, drawing attention to another post mocking fans that would skip the unreleased game if it contained woke humour.
Commenters responded, with some explaining the shift in Rockstar’s attitude to satirical humour, and others mocking the game’s haters, citing previous entries as an example of the series being woke all along yet people only care about it now.

One said the game’s efforts to not “punch down” on minority groups, and the aforementioned female lead character, who’s also reportedly Latino, are some of the main criticisms the game is facing.
They went on to say: “Some people view the latter points as Rockstar "going woke." Some in this group feel that part of the appeal of the GTA series is that 'it makes fun of everybody' and that the changes are going to turn away series fans in an attempt to appeal to a group that won't buy GTA VI anyways.”
Another said: “My favourite part about this “controversy” is that if you spend 5 minutes in GTA V or GTA IV looking at and listening to the in-game culture and commercials and movies and whatnot; they’re all woke as fuck, there just wasn’t that term/the culture wars 10 years ago when 5 came out.”
GTA VI’s release date is still unknown, though Rockstar’s publisher, Take-Two Interactive, has hinted at a 2025 release. We’ve also not had a proper look at the game outside of gameplay leaks, so we can expect a reveal sometime this year or the next.
