After the absolute mess that was WWE 2K20, I’m not sure that anyone was really expecting great things from 2K22. Fans spotted glitches in one of the trailers prior to its release, which really didn’t bode well on the back of its notoriously buggy predecessor. The announcement that Machine Gun Kelly and Jake Paul would be playable characters sure was something, too. I honestly couldn’t tell you what audience that was supposed to appeal to.
Regardless, the general consensus when 2K22 released in March this year seemed to be that, yeah, it’s pretty good, actually. The PS5 version of the game is sitting at a very respectable 77 on Metacritic, with a slightly lower (but still sweet) user score of 7.4. Not bad at all. So with that victory under their belts, it’s not at all surprising that WWE have their sights set on their next hit game.
Take a look at the trailer for WWE 2K22 below.
As reported by Wrestling Inc., WWE’s chief brand officer, Stephanie McMahon, recently revealed in a Q1 earnings call that an official RPG is happening, and it won’t be long until we’re hearing about it: “We continue to see strength in the performance of our mobile games, with 2K and Scopely’s Supercard and Champions, and recently signed a new deal in the role-playing game space that will be announced soon,” she said.

In the same call, she also spoke about the success of WWE 2K22, and said that the team were “extremely pleased” with the 2K series’ relaunch: “Innovation and interactivity are critical of the success of any media property. We were extremely pleased with the re-launch of our premium video game console franchise, WWE 2K,” she said. “After taking a little more than a year off to improve the game engine, we worked hand-in-glove with our partners at Take-Two Interactive, listened to our customers and fans, and earned back their trust by delivering a game that [exceeded] their expectations.”
Unfortunately, as of now, that’s all we know about the RPG, but it sounds like we won’t have long to wait until its official announcement. The chance of it being an open-world adventure starring The Undertaker is low, but not zero.
