There are a lot of popular genres out there, but perhaps none draw in as many players consistently as Action RPGs, with some absolute titans in the genre on PC that continue to draw in millions of players.

As such, when a new one hits the market, it's important that it does things differently, and very well, to stand out in what is an extremely saturated field full of competent competitors.

Now, one such game has just hit the Steam storefront for the first time, and whilst it did look like it had all the ingredients to be a banger, it's proving quite divisive with fans and players.

Duet Night Abyss Fails to Hit All the Right Notes

Why is Duet Night Abyss Reviewing Poorly?

Prior to launch, devs claimed Duet Night Abyss would not include character or weapon gacha, so every player could get every character and weapon in-game, for free. While that is true, there's still a gacha system for cosmetics, and fans have just had enough.

To be fair to newly released action RPG Duet Night Abyss, they never said cosmetics were off the menu. I personally love its stunning visuals and its interesting story that feels very different to other games in the genre right now.

Essentially you'll be following a twin narrative, which the development teams describes, in an admittedly very cryptic way, saying, "In the long and repetitive dream, quicksand constantly pours down. The compass of destiny starts to tick. The two wake up and embark on their separate journeys. On this shore, you emerged from a perilous situation but were exiled to the harsh North Border, struggling to survive. On the other shore, you found yourself in a maelstrom of power, striving to escape from a cage woven with conspiracies."

Mysterious indeed.

The Story is Not For Casual Players For Sure

If you're none the wiser, that's totally fair enough, but it's designed to be one of those narratives that's confusing and mysterious, until it isn't.

At the same time, the game features a ton of strategic experimentation and ways to build/play your character, allowing you to enjoy everything at your own pace without being forced down rigid paths.

It's all good stuff, but players aren't quite happy with the product they have played thus far.

"I've played the game for about 250 hours or so on the standalone client, been playing since launch. I recently decided to quit the game shortly before the Steam release as it wasn't really delivering on things I was looking for in a looter," one comment read.

"This is one of those times where I genuinely wish I could give a grey, middle-of-the-road "neutral" review. But since that isn't possible, I have to give it a negative review. I definitely wouldn't give it a positive one in it's current state," another added.

It's early days for the game's journey on Steam, so we'll have to give the development team a chance to respond to the most egregious complaints. Here's hoping they can start changing public opinion.
