What if you took a sprawling sci-fi RPG like Mass Effect and blended it with the horror aesthetics of a legendary title like Bloodborne?
Well, you might end up with something like Exodus, an upcoming sci-fi RPG that seeks to include elements of body horror.
You may recall that Exodus was unveiled during last year’s The Game Awards, with Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey stopping by to make the announcement which, yes, means he’s in the game.

Exodus comes from new studio Archetype Entertainment which actually partly consists of ex-BioWare employees, so it’s not a real surprise that Exodus clearly cites Mass Effect as a major inspiration.
The game is being created in Unreal Engine 5, so boasts dazzling visuals, and will take players to a new dawn of civilisation.
“Having fled a dying Earth, humanity has found a new home in a hostile galaxy,” reads the synopsis.
“Here, we are the underdogs, fighting our final battle for survival. You are the Traveler, humanity’s last hope.”

No release date has been set for Exodus but we do know that it’s due to land on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Since its announcement, it's largely been radio silence from studio Archetype, but a brand new trailer has just been dropped.
You can take a look at that trailer below.
It’s a cinematic trailer, so there’s no gameplay for us to fawn over.

Still, it helps us get a feel for the game.
In particular, it grants us a look at some of the horrors that await us in space - and this is where a feeling of Bloodborne drips in.
A ship appears to float through the galaxy made up of thousands of gnawing faces, seemingly keen to eat anything it or they come across - whether that’s man or machine.
In fact, we see a spaceship becoming consumed by this entity revealed to be the ‘Mara Yama’ faction, a group of “horrifying Celestials, twisted into monstrous forms, are unlike anything humanity has ever faced in the battle for survival.”

“The Mara-Yama feed on fear, delight in cruelty, and revel in the agony of their prey. They aren't just hunters - they are sadistic predators who savor every moment of psychological torment they inflict,” reads an official release.
“They're after more than cargo - they harvest minds, memories, and even emotions, leaving survivors forever haunted by the terror that hides between the stars. Few escape their grip, but those who do know the frightening truth that lurks out there in the void.”
Exodus needs to show off some in-engine footage to truly secure our interest but I’ve got to say, it’s ticking all of the right boxes so far.
