Previews for Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight are out now, and one detail in particular that everyone is focused on is the sheer size of the world map.

Ever since Lego made the switch to doing open-world games over a decade ago, it seems like Traveller’s Tales has consistently tried to one-up itself with every new game.

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’s Gotham City appears to be fitting in with that trend by presenting what may be Lego’s largest open world to date, and it might even be bigger than Arkham Knight’s.

Just How Big Is Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight's Open World, Anyway?

As several attendees to the preview are saying, it looks like Gotham City in Legacy of the Dark Knight appears to be the biggest open-world rendition of the city that we’ve had so far.

“Zooming out on the map makes clear how seriously TT Games took the work to create a game that could work for all ages — a one-off mission would be perfect for kids but adults with the open-world brainworms will have plenty to plow through,” reads Polygon’s preview.

“With four islands to explore and a map chock-full of side content and collectibles (yes, that includes Riddler challenges), there's no shortage of things to do,” Game Informer’s preview adds. “I didn't spend nearly as much time in Gotham as I wanted to, and when Legacy of the Dark Knight drops later this month, I see myself spending quite a long time prowling its rooftops and alleyways.”

“The number of activity icons on the map is overwhelming, and it promises to keep you busy in the open world for a long while. I just hope these quick tasks continue to entertain me for a few hours without becoming repetitive,” reads the preview by Well Played.

You get the gist. This game’s pretty big. Previous Batman games have used open worlds, particularly Batman: Arkham City and Arkham Knight, which featured the cities of Arkham and Gotham that you could explore during gameplay.

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the first new game from Traveller’s Tales since 2022’s Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and the 21st Lego game the company has produced overall.

In it, you play as Batman and several other characters from the DC universe in an original story which pulls from many different aspects of the Batman franchise.

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on 22 May, 2026. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also planned for the future.
