We didn't think The Last of Us Part II was a masterwork but it provoked the player to think about the legacy of love and rage, and it delivered some gut-wrenching gameplay too. Yet it was beset with controversy from the leaks that revealed a rather major plot point.
And then, The Last of Us Part II players were playing Abby, the very person they suddenly held all of this vitriol for. As a character, Joel had achieved legendary status in gaming, in spite of his complex choice at the end of the original game, and so the loss turned a fair few people off the game. What they missed out on were the journeys of Abby and Ellie, their contrasts and strange similarities, and a cohort of supporting characters who would throw their respective quests for revenge in harsh light. The game even found fans in the most unexpected of gamers, like this elderly couple who sought help for Part II's challenging parts on Craigslist.

"So I bought this the day it came out, and I quit playing about 20 minutes after the scene," admitted Reddit user MrCarey, adding that a playthrough of Part I reignited their interest in what else Part II had to offer. "I’m so glad I did. This game has been absolutely great so far, and I feel like I just needed to get that spark through a Part I replay. Hopefully the show coming out will get people like me to give it another chance, because I was really missing out."
