You’d think something as simple as paying the small amount of cash it takes to keep a registered and recognisable domain name for one of your flagship franchises would be something that you, a company like Konami, would be keeping on top of with some degree of urgency. Well, indeed, you’d think.
It appears that Konami let the domain silenthill.com expire, and somebody else has snapped it up with gusto. This isn’t even the first time the company has done this which once again begs the question - why on earth does Konami hate Silent Hill so much?

If you were to visit the link right now, at time of writing, and go to silenthill.com you’d be greeted with a pretty hilarious static image of a tweet made by Silent Hill artist Masahiro Ito from earlier this year, which simply reads, “I wish I hadn’t designed fxxkin Pyramid Head.”

That’s the art director of Silent Hill 2, by the way. Ito also stated in a now deleted tweet that he thinks the monster has become too big for his own boots, and his over-use in popular horror culture has cheapened him, which I suppose is kind of fair.
The wild thing is, as I mentioned, that this isn’t even the first time Konami has let the domain for silenthill.com run out. As noted by PC Gamer, back in 2019 the domain lapsed long enough for it to be bought for the princely sum of $9,835. A small price to pay, I’m sure, for such online clout as literally owning the domain for one of the most beloved video game franchises of all time.
So the real question now is an obvious one. Will Konami be able to like, buy that back at some point? Probably, yeah. Do they even want to? Considering how blasé they’ve been about Silent Hill in recent years a small part of me reckons not. At least we’ve got Slitterhead to look forward to.
