Winning the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor earlier this week, Ke Huy Quan has said that he would be very happy to see The Goonies 2 hit the silver screen following the revival of his acting career.
You'll remember Quan from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in his first ever acting role. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were seeking a young actor to play Short Round and their last stop was Chinatown, Los Angeles. "Three weeks later, I was on a flight to Sri Lanka, and it was the beginning of the greatest adventure of my life," he said in an interview in 2022.
Spielberg arranged Quan's second role to be Richard "Data" Wang in The Goonies, however his career stalled in the United States, causing Quan to step away from acting. Fortunately, his name was the top of Everything Everywhere All at Once's directors list for the character of Waymond Wang, and it was clearly an inspired casting choice.

"We have the big man here tonight, Steven Spielberg, and I think that's one question that all of us want to ask him," said the actor in his acceptance speech for the award, and also thanked the director for giving him the chance to star opposite Harrison Ford when he was just 13 years old.
"Honestly, for the last 30 years, we've tried to do a Goonies 2. When I was much younger, I wished it would come to pass because that's the movie I thought I would need to make a career comeback. Honestly, we had numerous scripts, but there was not one script that felt like it would be up to what the original was," continued Quan. His win was significant in two ways - Quan is the first Asian actor to win Best Supporting Actor in almost 40 years and it was a triumph over the obstacles that he faced as a young Asian actor in the 1990s.

In fact, in a splendid circular way, former The Goonies costar Jeff Cohen represented Quan for the role of Waymond when they were in talks with Everything Everywhere All at Once's producers. "I really don't know if there's going to be a Goonies 2. But, I would be open to revisiting that character, Data, if there is an opportunity," he concluded. Well, here's hoping someone pens that perfect script.
