We may be over a month into 2024 now, but Hogwarts Legacy has just managed to secure one more 2023 achievement. Exemplifying what a colossal commercial success the game was, Hogwarts Legacy has officially earned the title of being the year’s best-selling game worldwide.
While Hogwarts Legacy garnered a very respectable score of 84 on Metacritic, those positive reviews did not translate into nominations when awards season rolled around. The game failed to pick up a single nomination at Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards, but it was a year stacked with fierce competition. You cannot discredit the reviews though, with players also heaping on immense praise - with the note that there is room for improvement. While a sequel hasn’t yet been announced, it certainly feels like a given after this latest bit of news.

That’s right. Hogwarts Legacy officially beat The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to become 2023’s top-selling game worldwide. As reported by VGC, Tears of the Kingdom sold 20.28 million copies in its first year whereas Hogwarts Legacy’s sales have exceeded 22 million. Hogwarts Legacy did, of course, release a few months earlier than Tears of the Kingdom so that’s worth keeping in mind.
Advert
In fact, this month marks one year since the game’s release with developers recently taking to Twitter to comment on that very fact: “As we near the one-year anniversary of Hogwarts Legacy, we wanted to let our community know that the Hogwarts Legacy PlayStation-exclusive content will be available on other platforms later this summer, along with additional updates and features for the game. Stay tuned in the coming months for more details on what’s coming to Hogwarts Legacy this year.”
With the PlayStation exclusive content only having a one year exclusivity window, Hogwarts Legacy fans are disappointed to see its wider rollout delayed to the summer. Those teased updates and features are quite exciting though, seeing as we’ve been limited to bug patches thus far. Could we see a companion system? Photo mode? A new explorable locale? Hogwarts Legacy could indeed do with something to draw players back in.
