Hogwarts Legacy is a tale of two halves. While it largely received positive reviews, it was by no means 2023’s most critically beloved game, missing out on a The Game Awards nomination. You cannot deny though that commercially, Hogwarts Legacy was easily the biggest success story of the year.
Google confirmed, in fact, that Hogwarts Legacy was the search engine’s ‘most searched for’ game in 2023. Rather understandably, this is the game many Harry Potter fans have been waiting for. We finally had the chance to explore Hogwarts castle in all its glory. While the game’s cave and ruin obsessed open world left a bit to be desired, many have declared Hogwarts as their favourite video game location of all-time. It’s no surprise then that Hogwarts Legacy has also now been declared as 2023’s best-selling game worldwide.

Portkey Games has announced that Hogwarts Legacy has sold more than 22 million copies - and as such, is just a couple million more away from landing a spot on Wikipedia’s list of the best-selling games of all-time. It helps that Hogwarts Legacy had a multi-platform release, drawing in as many players as possible from across different favoured consoles.

We’ve all heard stories too of Hogwarts Legacy being many people’s first game, perhaps sampling it on a partner or friend’s console. Those who maybe didn’t consider themselves to be interested in gaming were drawn in by the familiarity of the Wizarding World franchise. I’ve certainly heard my own non-gaming friends speak of trying it out.
Needless to say, given the game’s success, players are itching for more. “Now, we need two things,” Reddit user Duthnur wrote. “Quality DLC for this game ASAP [and] a sequel with far more story/quest/roleplay content and less elementary puzzles.” WULax17 added, “Absolutely shocked we’ve heard nothing on the DLC/sequel front. I can’t remember another game this massive that was so radio silent after launch.”
I can understand 2023 being without such an announcement. DLC or a sequel would’ve dominated conversation when for the best part of the year, devs were still waiting to launch the delayed Nintendo switch version. With that now out of the way though, anything feels possible.
