It’s been revealed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is now officially the most-successful Call of Duty game, earning $1 billion in revenue in just ten days. It doesn’t beat the all-time record held by Grand Theft Auto V though. This titan of the gaming world earnt the same amount in just three days.
The question is: What will dethrone GTA V? We know that GTA VI is on the way, although it’s likely to be several years until release. It wasn’t a conventional reveal by any means. Rockstar Games fell subject to a cyber attack during which over an hour of GTA VI development footage was stolen along with screenshots and source code. In the meantime, GTA V continues to reign supreme hitting a brand new sales milestone - but it is showing signs of slowing.
Take a look at this incredible GTA V mod which allows you to play as The Boys’ Homelander.
As reported by GTANet, it was revealed during a Take-Two investor conference that GTA V has now sold 170 million units worldwide, which is an astonishing amount. In truth though, the number could be higher than that. GTANet notes that Take-Two rounds their numbers so the figure lies somewhere between 170 and 175 million units.

In total, that means the Grand Theft Auto franchise has now sold over 385 million units. As noted by Tweak Town, Take-Two were shipping roughly five million copies of GTA V per quarter and have done so for five quarters in a row. This month’s “over 170 million copies,” is very similar to the previous quarter’s “nearly 170 million copies,” suggesting sales are slowing.
It was bound to happen eventually and I imagine, the closer we get towards GTA VI, the more we’ll see these figures drop. Still, I’d imagine GTA V’s sales will remain unbeaten for quite some time (Well, except for Minecraft).
