Grand Theft Auto VI will continue what Grand Theft Auto V began back when it was ported to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but there’s still only one definitive way to play it.

Back when GTA V got its first next-gen upgrade Rockstar Games did a lot more than upgrade the visuals - it added a new first-person mode to the game.

It was jarring at first but it quickly grew on players, and later became a launch-day feature of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Now GTA VI is obviously going to continue the trend but there are some gamers out there who are wondering if it’ll be the way to play, so I thought I’d throw my two cents in and say that I fundamentally disagree.

I’ve had my fun in first-person mode, but the most I’ve ever used it is for shootouts, either in the single-player or on GTA: Online.

It just provides better accuracy in my opinion, but I know that’s deeply psychological, it’s the same aiming regardless of where the camera is. But I can't change how I feel, can I?

Why Third Person Mode is Best For GTA 6

When it comes to the core gameplay of Grand Theft Auto, I strongly believe that it can only be truly appreciated in third-person. Those intense car chases with the crashes, flips and explosions need to be viewed from a more distant perspective. You can take in the cinematics better that way as opposed to first-person that’ll have you missing all the action.

Sure first-person is more immersive but I don’t know many Grand Theft Auto players that play for the immersion, they play for the fun factor.

Customisation has also become a big part of modern Rockstar games with the player changing the appearance of their character and having that appearance reflected in cutscenes.

Why go to the trouble though when you won’t be seeing it most of the time due to being in first-person. It’s one of the biggest problems with Cyberpunk 2077 in my opinion as it had a wealth of customisation options but hardly any opportunities to see your character in action. So much so, that there's a mod that changes that!

GTA VI is going to be a similar story in my opinion.

There’ll be loads to see and do and so many ways to customise our characters, and I for one will want to actually see them interacting with this new world.

Sure I’ll still use first-person mode from time to time but Grand Theft Auto ditching the top-down perspective for third-person was the best decision it ever made. It’s the definitive way to play in my eyes and ensures you’re getting the most out of your gameplay.
