It’s been a quiet shift but if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll notice that both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are slowly being left behind.
While both consoles served us well, they are beginning to show their age. After all, technology moves quickly. You need only look at Hogwarts Legacy to highlight the differences between the two console generations. In the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, exterior castle bridges were transformed into rather simplistic internal corridors, to cut down on the need to load such demanding exterior environments for a short journey between two interior locations. Loading screens were also added when leaving and entering Hogwarts castle. To put it simply, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can no longer keep up - so you can understand why fans are hoping that GTA VI will be a new-gen exclusive.
Hogwarts Legacy launches on Nintendo Switch today. Look at the game in action on the console below.
The conversation was kickstarted by Reddit user JTG005 who said, “Would be a shame if they decided to launch GTA VI on PS4/Xbox One. Seeing how they ported [Red Dead Redemption] over to PS4, it shows that they are interested in the large market share these older consoles have. It would be a sad day as a consumer if [Rockstar] decided they want to cash in on the PS4 and Xbox One install base as GTA VI will be their biggest and most expensive game ever.”

They continued, “Another incident that adds to my worry is that the leaks show the game running on a PS4. I really hope that isn’t the case. I don’t want such an ambitious game being held back by last-gen consoles.” Many shared the user's concern. User Hyper669 said, “They had to hold back a lot when making GTA V so it could fit on PS3 and Xbox 360. I hope they finally go all out with VI, like they did with RDR2,” while USFederalGovt wrote, “Releasing GTA VI on PS4 and Xbox One would be a huge mistake. Sure, it may mean slightly more money quicker, but the problem is that it would limit the game significantly.”
I expect that we won’t see the game release on these older consoles. GTA VI has been so long in the making that I’m sure Rockstar will be hoping to push the PlayStation 5’s and Xbox Series X/S’s capabilities. With the trailer just a couple of weeks away, it’s wild to think that we’ll soon finally have an idea of what’s in store.
