Spoilers for Sonic The Hedgehog 2 follow - read on at your own risk!
Like it or not, it looks like the Sonic The Hedgehog cinematic universe is coming. Against all odds, 2020's live-action movie was genuinely quite good! And this year's sequel, which leans much more heavily into the original video games, has been even more successful.
While it's yet to be officially confirmed, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is an inevitability - and the post-credits scene for the Blue Blur's most recent adventure gives us a pretty good idea of which classic character is showing up next.
Again, I have to stress that major spoilers for Sonic The Hedgehog 2 follow. Don't read below if you don't want to know!
Still here? Wonderful. Sonic The Hedgehog 2's post-credits scene clearly sets up none other than Shadow The Hedgehog as the antagonist for the next instalment. In the latest movie's final moments, we see the fan-favourite antihero floating in some kind of stasis tank guarded by GUN soldiers, before it cuts to black.
This throws up some thrilling questions for longtime Sonic fans. Is Sonic The Hedgehog 3 going to adapt the widely beloved Sonic Adventure 2? Will the movie version of Shadow use guns and ride a motorcycle like in (some of) the games? And who could possibly voice the character when the time comes?
One of the most popular suggestions for Shadow is none other than Keanu Reeves, a man with a voice like a dark and stormy night. The John Wick star is already set to play Batman in an upcoming movie, and we imagine he could certainly do justice to Shadow The Hedgehog.
Sure enough, an excellent fan-made edit shared by Twitter user @SonicpoX (and made by @_hxzzx) gives us a clear idea of just how perfect Reeves would be as Sonic's rival. Take a look below!
While this is hardly official confirmation that Reeves will play Shadow, the reaction has been so positive that we'd imagine SEGA and Paramount Pictures are bound to take notice. A few years ago I might have laughed at the idea of Reeves playing a part like Shadow The Hedgehog. But we now live in a world where Idris Elba is Knuckles the Echidna, so I guess through Sonic all things are possible.
