When Game Freak and Nintendo don’t produce Pokémon games fast enough, the fans get involved and create their own.
There’s a huge number of Pokémon ROMhacks and original games built on old Pokémon game engines, or even using third-party software.

One of those games in Pokémon Uranium, a game that took nine years to create and brings a whole new type of Pokémon.

Unfortunately, after the game was released the developers were hit with a cease and desist by Nintendo which caused them to remove the game from their website.
You can still find sources for the download and fans are continually patching the game since the creators stopped work and support for the title.
In this game, the player explores the region of Tandor, based on Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
The core story has a touch of Fallout to it as the protagonist's mother has died in an explosion at a nuclear power plant, adding an irradiated feel to the plot.

This brought in a new Pokémon type - nuclear.
Fans enjoyed the game for its darker storyline and new mechanics, as expressed on Reddit threads which keep the game alive today.
“It's great! The only real flaws are the level curve,” explains one Redditor.
User, StridentHawk comments, “It's pretty good overall. The rival Theo is unlikeable at first but develops nicely over the course of the game. The fakemons are a mixed bag somewhat.”

Fakemons are community created Pokémon, and usually these fanmade games are filled with them.
Pokémon Uranium did a good job of keeping players locked into their Pokédex as described by this Redditor, “Uranium was the only time it actually felt rewarding to complete the Pokédex, complete with milestones including eggs for Pokémon you otherwise could not get at 50, 100, and 150 respectively.”
