Whether it's splatter, slasher or suspense, horror tries its utmost to surprise us. Netflix's The Midnight Club set the world record for the highest number of jumpscares and Terrifier 2 saw viewers stumbling out of theatres to throw up and even faint in some cases. Yet, when the everyday is used to frightening effect, it can be sensational. Like the cheese grater scene in the new Evil Dead Rise trailer.
I'll buff this story out with a bit of detail before we get into the gore of this ghastly grater moment. Evil Dead Rise is the fifth film in the franchise, is set in the city and does not star Bruce Campbell, which is uncharacteristic. "It's book-centric, said Campbell of Rise in 2021. It's all about [the Necronomicon]. Where does this book wind up and what happens to it over the millennia? ... It's no more cabin in the woods. It's entirely different, unsuspecting heroines who are going to save the day."
This is the red band trailer for Evil Dead Rise - if you can stomach it...
Somehow, the Necronomicon lands in an apartment block in Los Angeles and is stumbled upon by a young family. Its power is unleashed, the Deadites return, and let's say not even Jo Frost would set foot in this abode to solve this domestic drama.

Ellie (played by Alyssa Sutherland) becomes possessed and her twisted lines are a real highlight between the buckets of blood and horror. The moment where her youngest is looking at her through the peephole and she reassures the child that her bedraggled look is "nothing a big ol' kiss from [her] won't fix..." Chills. I love it.
Scrolling through social media, director Lee Cronin and his team must be over the moon with the elated responses, and what's really got people talking is the horrendous use of a cheese grater to attack our hero, Beth. Take a look:
You know, I would say it's resourceful. Evil Dead Rise is released on 21 April, 2023.
