A new Elden Ring free download has just added a fun gameplay twist to the way you collect runes.
With Elden Ring now being a few years old, players have gotten used to the level of difficulty the game has to offer.
Despite already being a pretty tricky game in itself, some players who desire an extra challenge have gone to extreme lengths to try and make things a little more difficult.
This new mod posted to the Elden Ring Nexus Mods page does exactly that, by putting a fun gameplay twist on the way you collect and deplete runes.

Titled ‘Action Based Runes’, the mod adds a rune-based reward and penalty system tied to various gameplay events that can occur while you play.
With the mod installed, you earn runes for damaging enemies, killing them while at low health, and picking up or crafting items. Meanwhile, you will also lose runes if you take damage or die.
Essentially, it adds a new risk/reward system to the game where you’ll earn loads of runes if you play well, but run the risk of losing more if you play sloppily or get unlucky.
If you do find it a little unfair though (or alternatively, not unfair enough), the mod also has a built-in tool to be able to configure it to your liking. So, feel free to go nuts with it.

It’s a little similar to another mod I covered a few weeks ago, Rune Health, which changed the value of your health depending on how many runes you’re holding.
Combining both mods might seem like a recipe for disaster, but it also might give you the extra hard difficulty mode that you know you’re craving. Use at your own risk.
Altogether though, it proves just how tantalising the Elden Ring experience is, that a game already known for being quite challenging is evoking more players to seek out harder challenges.
In other Elden Ring news, the upcoming movie produced by A24 has started principal photography. Directed by Alex Garland, the film stars Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, Tom Burke, Jonathan Pryce, and Peter Serafinowicz.
It’s currently filming in the United Kingdom and Scotland, with further filming occurring in Iceland over the summer. Filming is expected to last 100 days, and a lengthy post-production schedule is expected following that.
Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Peter Rice, George R. R. Martin, and Vince Gerardis are listed as producers on the film, and it is scheduled for release on 3 March, 2028.
