The Cyberpunk 2077 world expanded a couple of years ago with the release of the Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners; a bold and colourful take on Night City filled with interesting characters and amazing action-packed sequences.
I was a huge fan of the show, and particularly the anarchic and chaotic Rebecca. It pleases me that this side of Cyberpunk 2077 is being further expanded with a new RPG where we’ll be able to play through skirmishes between gangs, with “a slick and stylish aesthetic and fast, responsive gameplay.”
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was well received by critics and fans alike when it launched in 2022.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners: Combat Zone is a board game played with several dice to emulate the combat of this grungy, sci-fi world. Built on Monster Fight Club’s [RE]action game engine, players will face off in battles that can be as chaotic as the TV show its based on as the ruleset doesn’t require your characters to stand still. You can be constantly moving and attacking.

The “two-player starter box contains 24 figures and cards, a fold-out game board measuring 22x30 inches, terrain representing the impoverished district of Santo Domingo, decks for loot, gear and programs and enough dice and tokens for both players.”
Mentioned in the blurb for the game, players should be able to loot areas of the map and other players, giving this the feel of the game. You’ll be able to control either the cast of the show, or the Arasaka Corporation in head-to-head fights where dice and cards plot out your actions. Interestingly, the colour-coded cards are where the [RE]action engine gets its name as you’ll be playing these as you react to each others moves and abilities, making it feel more like an unscripted fight you would see in the video game.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners: Combat Zone will be releasing this year, although no firm date has yet been set.
