Bethesda's biggest-ever game is totally free for everyone to download right now

Love RPGs? Get on this!

Everyone loves Skyrim and Oblivion from the Elder Scrolls series, but these wouldn’t exist without Bethesda’s earliest games which paved the way for large-scale RPGs. One of these is Daggerfall, perhaps the most well-loved of the early games.

It’s so well-loved that fans have spent years recreating the game from scratch in Unity allowing the game to be brought to modern PCs and introduce the game to fans of the Elder Scrolls series who might not have played Daggerfall previously.

Skyrim is the best of the Elder Scrolls series and has spawned many versions

As mentioned on the game’s DFWorkshop page, the game has been lovingly recreated while squashing lots of bugs from the original release along with adding in some quality of life improvements to make for a smoother experience. On top of this the game will feature new lighting boosts, better draw distances, overhauled graphics, plus the ability to mod the creation for even more personalisation.

You will need a copy of the original Daggerfall release which can be easily found on Steam for free, and from there you can follow the directions to upgrade it to the Unity version. Daggerfall is the second installment in the Elder Scrolls franchise and began to set the stage for what would follow. While it may not appeal visually to many players, it’s an essential game for lovers of Skyrim and Oblivion, plus it gives you something to play while we await Elder Scrolls 6.

Personally, I’d love to find some time to play this fan creation. Daggerfall has a brilliant story and the world around it is just as endearing and inspiring as what followed. Hopefull, we’ll one day see a remake of this and Morrowind come from Bethesda themselves allowing fans to explore them with updated visuals and sound design. Thankfully, for now, we have dedicated fans who want to preserve and improve on these classics.
