Now over twenty years, and many Battlefield entries later, one modder has been working on a way to bring Battlefield 1942 into the current day graphical standards.

Graphics Mod by ScureHD is a graphics overhaul for Battlefield 1942 which contains texture updates for terrain, skybox, environment, vegetation, vehicles and weapons.
It brings the 2002 title up to 4096x4096 resolution as well as adding some basic tweaks such as enabled in-engine specular lights and environmental reflections.
Not only that but maps can now be loaded in with higher render distance and LOD quality.
The most important point is that ScureHD did not use any AI to create this mod. Instead they reworked every texture by hand “with an aim to keep the original atmosphere”.

“All color or contrast changes are coming from the included Reshade preset. My aim was to get a more vivid look, simply because that's the current trend for video games”, the modder explains.
The mod file gives us a sneak peek at some of the improvements that are offered by sharing some before and after screenshots.
It is clear that it is a dramatic improvement whilst still maintaining the original feel of Battlefield 1942.
Better yet, it is completely free to download and will overwrite the game’s original files to work as an add-on or custom mod.
