Avatar 2 becomes 14th biggest movie in history after just two weeks

Avatar: The Way of Water is smashing records after raking in over $1 billion at the box office in just two weeks.

Well, if Avatar: The Way of Water has proved anything, it’s that we shouldn’t underestimate James Cameron. Plenty of us have questioned Avatar’s cultural impact. Sure, most of us have seen it, but what do you remember? The answer is usually not much at all. That’s not to say that Avatar isn’t an impressive film, it is. The query was just whether people had retained enough attachment to be interested in seeing a second instalment all these years later.

Cameron previously revealed that The Way of Water needed to perform exceptionally well in order for Avatar 4 and 5 to be greenlit. Despite its not-so-peeing-friendly runtime, The Way of Water has already smashed past the $1 billion mark at the box office and has now become the 14th biggest movie in history - just two weeks after release.

Check out the trailer for The Way of Water below.

As reported by Variety, Avatar: The Way of Water has surged ahead of Black Panther and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to become the 14th best-performing movie in history - which genuinely does surprise me. If you had to guess, you’d have imagined that Deathly Hallows Part 2 - the finale of one of the biggest film franchises of all-time - would have outperformed The Way of Water, but it’s not the case.

In fact, The Way of Water will likely rise further up the ranks. It could soon overtake Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick which has taken $1.49 billion at the box office and was 2022’s highest-grossing film.

Interestingly, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has so far scooped up $820 million globally - which is less than the $1.3 billion generated by the original Black Panther. Then again, Disney+ has since entered the fold so I’d guess that there are plenty of people happy to wait a couple months for the streaming release.
