Assassin's Creed Odyssey called 'greatest RPG I've ever played', to confusion of other fans

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series is one of its most lucrative properties with fans lapping up every release, even though the series may have lost its way with recent entries.
When the Assassin’s Creed series first began in 2007, it was quite a different game than what it is today. Sure, from beginning to end, the series still has a focus on stealth, parkour and assassination. However, at least since Assassin’s Creed Origins in 2017, and perhaps to some extent, 2014’s Unity, a focus on RPG elements has certainly played a bigger role.

Previously, fans have dubbed Assassin’s Creed Origins as ‘the best of the RPG trilogy, but there is another, namely Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Back in May 2023, fans also labelled Odyssey as the best RPG game, but the worst Assassin’s Creed. As you can see, these two particular games do divide some opinions, depending on the perspective.
Now, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the topic of discussion once more with fans on Reddit, this time though, it’s being dubbed as quite possibly, the best RPG that one gamer has ever played.
“I hate to say this as somebody that now hates Ubisoft after having every single AC game, but Ubisoft really outdid itself with Odyssey,” exclaimed Any-Reward-2055. “It gets so much hate for not being about “assassins” but if you ever played all of the prior games you know that Odyssey is pretty damn lore heavy.
“Even though it’s not about the assassins, it has so much to do with ISU [also known as ‘The First Civilization and Those Who Came Before’], lore which is a major part of all of the games. The side quest and storyline are so well combined. Things that you do matter. Just a great game all around," they continued.
This ‘RPG trilogy’ which also includes Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, divided discussion on the Reddit thread. “It isn't the best RPG game I've ever played in the strictest RPG sense, but it is an excellent game and one of my favourites,” replied WaywardJake.
“Odyssey is my favourite AC games among the three AC RPGs. The map is great. Travelling to different islands and exploring those islands that have unique stories feels rewarding,” rejoiced lamsese. “The game having open sea alone is a big plus. I think it was a big upgrade from Origins and Valhalla was a downgrade for me.”
“If AC Odyssey is the "best RPG" you've ever played, you simply haven't played enough RPGs,” said a defiant Takhar7. To which Eclipse_Sable replied quite brilliantly, saying: “It's in my top three games of all time, and I've played at least 30-50 RPGs. Just because you don't like a game doesn't mean nobody else can.”
The next entry in the Ubisoft series is Assassin’s Creed Mirage which is now releasing a week earlier than expected for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is out now for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. What’s more, it’s not only backwards compatible with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but it’s also benefited from a new-gen framerate boost.
