Activision Blizzard recently revealed its first quarter financial report for 2022, which showed notable losses almost across the board for one of the world’s largest publishers compared to the same quarter in 2021.
While King, the developer and publisher of numerous mobile and social games such as Candy Crush, had reportedly “robust growth” in Q1 2022 quarter, all other sectors of Activision Blizzard posted losses. The company has blamed the disappointing launch of Call Of Duty: Vanguard and Call Of Duty: Warzone, and a gap in Blizzard’s release schedule for the loss of over half a billion dollars in revenue compared to the same quarter in 2021.

Activision Blizzard is currently in the process of being acquired by Microsoft, a deal revealed after stock prices plummeted in the wake of numerous allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment, and toxic work culture at the company. There are also several lawsuits being brought against it, including one that sees the company being sued over the wrongful death of an employee. Finance manager Kerri Moynihan took her own life at a company retreat after alleged bullying.

According to statistics which cover January to March of 2022, there were 372 million monthly active users of Activision Blizzard products. This includes the users who play games developed and published by King, which reported growth of a percentage in the “double-digits” for the quarter.
Despite growth at King of a minimum of ten percent, there are reportedly over 60 million fewer active users than the same quarter in 2021. The first quarter of 2021 saw enormous growth for Activision Blizzard and was the last quarter recorded before the lawsuits were brought against the company. This period set the highest recorded active users for the company, at 435 million. The company has seen a decline in users ever since.
Activision Blizzard has created a fund of $18 million for those involved in lawsuits against the company. If an individual chooses to accept a share of the fund, they then relinquish their rights to continue with legal action.
