This SpongeBob SquarePants Horror Game Is Absurd And Unsettling

Something tells me the Krusty Krab isn't getting a Michelin Star any time soon.

The True Ingredients is a horror game that is a goofy twist on SpongeBob SquarePants, trapping an unsuspecting customer in the disturbing bowels of the restaurant being hunted by the titular fry cook.

In the game, the player visits the (legally distinct) Krunchy Kans restaurant to try one of their famed human patty burgers. Unfortunately, the visitor is unable to pay for their $87.99 meal and is hauled down to the depths of the Krunchy Kans to be imprisoned with others that have incurred the wrath of the owner.

Check out Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, pitting characters like SpongeBob SquarePants against Michaelangelo, Catdog, Korra and more, in its announcement trailer!

From indie developer RenderPi, The True Ingredients is what I would assume you would extract if you were panning the neuroses of a nine-year-old's nightmares, yet it's still managing to send a chill down YouTubers' spines. "Patrick" slamming his "face" on the glass of the Krunchy Kans with no acknowledgement from anyone is deeply unsettling, and calling the liquid splattered on tables and seeping under the doors "ketchup" only underscores the overt horror, suggesting that there's something even worse to look forward to.

Fundamentally, though it is an absurd game about a cannibalistic SpongeBob, it taps into our foundational fears of the dark and being consumed by something bigger than us, which actually comes from the memories of our Neanderthal ancestors. It doesn't matter, then, what shape the scare arrives in, even if it is a lawsuit-avoidant red crab under the sea.
