3pm. It’s that time of the day again. I concentrate hard… on my Super Auto Pets game. This is it, I’m one trophy away from my first Arenas win, I’ve trained an entire three days for this moment. A lone Scorpion sits at the helm of my offense to take out any heavy hitters the enemy may have. My Rooster is scaled up to level two, with a level two Dodo behind to boost the Rooster’s attack. A powerful Kangaroo is next in line, ready to become even stronger with each strike from the unit in front. To finish my squad, a Shark stoically sits at the back, knowing that it’ll gain one attack and two defense points for every pet that falls before it.
‘Surely someone will notice that I’ve been on the toilet for nearly fifteen minutes now’, I think to myself, as my Rooster faints, spawning two little Chicks in its place. I just have the enemy Ox to take down now and victory will be mine. The Ox has the Melon Armor power-up though, meaning it blocks 20 attack points for a turn. It takes out both Chicks and my Dodo. By this point though, my Kangaroo has been buffed so much it could easily be mistaken for an Australian superhero. One swift punch from the Roo and confetti fills the entire six-inch screen of my Android phone. I’ve won a game of Super Auto Pets! I should probably go back to work now…
For those of you that don’t know what Super Auto Pets is, the short story above may be a little confusing. Released in September 2021, SAP is an auto-battler (think Darkest Dungeon or Teamfight Tactics), where you build a lineup of pets to defeat an opponent. In-between rounds you have ten coins to buy new pets and buff up your team. Win ten rounds without losing ten lives and you’re the champion! Simple right? Well yes, but also no. There’s actually quite a lot to learn in SAP if you want to win. Using different animals that work together is your key to success. Do you put your Tiger behind or in front of your Snake? The more you play, the more tactical you’ll become.
I first played SAP at my friends house at 4am after a night out, which felt like I’d fallen into some weird fever dream. My pal has put in over 100 hours on the game and I could tell he was pulling his hair out as I wasted my money on the wrong pets at the wrong time. However, it did make me download the game on my phone the following morning so I could play and show him how much I’d improved the next time we met.
Super Auto Pets quickly became the thing I’d do while on the loo. Gone are the days of reading the newspaper on the latrine.I swiftly learned when to buy and sell pets, when to level them up, when to use food and how to plan for the rounds ahead. I even watched a SAP competitive tournament on Twitch to get tips and figure out new strategies. The meta is always changing and you can build a team around almost every animal, giving the game the longevity to last lots of toilet breaks. Games only last between 5 and 20 minutes so you can get away with it, even at the office.
I am therefore crowning Super Auto Pets GAMINGbible’s ‘Best Game To Play Whilst On The Loo’. I haven’t asked my editor if it’s okay to do so but no one else has put a game forward so it wins automatically. Though we have played some of 'those weird mobile games' and reviewed them, so you don't have to.
Super Auto Pets is available to download for free on PC and Android phones, with an iOS app coming soon.
