The world is anxiously anticipating the release of Rockstar Games’ next Grand Theft Auto game. GTA 6 (it’s not officially called that yet, by the way, but that’s what everyone’s been referring to it as) was confirmed to be in active development back in February 2022. At the time, the developers shared very little about the new title, but asked fans to stay tuned for news, and added that they “look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready”.
We’ve still not been given an actual trailer for GTA 6, although we got a lot of information about it due to a big leak surfacing online in September. The leak seemingly revealed the setting of the game as well as its protagonists, and Rockstar issued a statement which confirmed its legitimacy: “We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way,” they wrote at the time.
Even with all that though, gamers around the world have still got a lot of questions. Most notably, when will GTA 6 come out, and what platforms will it be playable on? Given the expense of new-gen consoles (as well as the frequent stock issues surrounding them), getting a PS5 or Xbox Series X isn’t easy for everyone. Therefore, having GTA 6 be playable on PS4 or Xbox One would certainly be an option that many would welcome.

At the time of writing, Rockstar Games hasn’t confirmed what platforms GTA 6 will be playable on, but we can make some solid guesses. It’s likely that the title is still years away from its release - one insider recently claimed that it could be 2025 before the game graces our consoles, and it could still be even further away than that. Given that both Microsoft and Sony’s last-gen consoles turn 10 years old in 2023, it seems unlikely that GTA 6 would be playable on PS4 or Xbox One, since they’ll be so old by the time it releases.
One saving grace is that it’s unlikely that GTA 6 will be a PlayStation or Xbox exclusive, due to the previous titles such as GTA 5, GTA 4 and San Andreas all releasing on multiple platforms. As such, it’s unlikely that the title will be locked to the PS5 or Xbox Series X.
At the time of writing, however, this is pure speculation - we’ll be sure to update when we know for sure if GTA 6 will be playable on the PS4 and Xbox One.
